Redefining Diversity and Equity Community Options: The Kroger Exit

Kroger, the US's largest supermarket, whose exit from Memphis' Historic Orange Mound ALMOST created a food desert until Cheryl Scales. She stepped up as the lead justice champion who activated the community and tapped structural leaders including Civil Rights legend Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr., civic and ministerial leaders. After a strategy meeting with Kroger CFO led by Cheryl, an unprecedented relationship happened opening doors to potentially reopen or relationship with a competitor versus leaving a hole. The store remain closed with a daily security presence. However, this initial meeting created the bridge for local civic leaders to lead additional discussions approximately 18 months later. Yes! Children Make Civic History for Their School!

Yes! #DunbarOpen. What I LOVE is these beautiul children LIVED their Civics lesson with positive results. When the school board was on its 3rd and final vote, these children inspired the greatest collection of community to wrap around the school in an unprecedented way. It changed the course of closure with courage and conviction to a way forward of confidence and possibility. An exciting story to read.
